What is database indexing, and why use it?

The answer, in four steps
- Start. An index is a sorted lookup structure that lets the database find rows without reading the whole table.
- Explain. Without one, a search scans every row. With one, it jumps close to the match, like the index of a book.
- Example. Searching users by email in a table of a million rows is slow until email is indexed.
- Close. The trade-off is extra storage and slower writes, so index the columns you search by often.
